An important security principle of the section on asset classification and control is that information related assets should have an owner who is responsible and accountable for controlling security of the assets. For example, assets may include applications and system software, tools and utilities, hardware, networks and communications and services.

The task may well be delegated to one or more individuals or groups but this should not detract from the concept of a nominated responsible owner.
